 Passion and Ice book

This book is not about the pharmaceutical industry, and it is not about GlaxoSmithKline per se.  Nor is it a book whose purpose is to promote the value of our company or the benefits of our medicines.  Make no mistake about it:  I believe deeply in the mission of our organization, and I am most thankful that my company has afforded me the many opportunities and special mentors I describe in Passion and ICE.

This book, however, is simply about values in leadership.  Those values transcend my career at GlaxoSmithKline and extend back to experiences from my childhood, some of which I describe here as having had a significant impact on my leadership beliefs today.  I tell several stories from my memory bank because I believe that stories provide illustrative and memorable imprints for the reader to use. Reading my stories is extremely practical for you in your daily life at work, at home, and in the community.

My values in leadership center on a simple, hearty recipe whose ingredients are integrity, courage, and empathy wrapped in a crust of passion.  It is truly the staff of life because it provides you, the reader with a simple, nourishing meal that will energize you around leadership values and behaviors.  I hope you enjoy taking it in as much as I have enjoyed writing it.

REVIEWS FOR PASSION AND ICE

Steve, I read your book this week and immediately booked a vacation for Emerald Isle so that we can have beers and discuss it. Stop calling it a 'little' book. It was great and if I were still in the Marines it would be required reading for my officers. I loved it. You rock.

Just wanted to let you know that I had a chance to read through your book "Passion and ICE". Awesome book on leadership (and I've read a fair share). What really resonated with me was the straightforward language that you use and the childhood stories from your life in Philly that helped mold your leadership style.

Steve,

I want to thank you again for your book. I found it to be a great story with wonderful bits of wisdom and insight to the business of GSK and life. I thoroughly enjoyed the read, in fact, plan to discuss the book before giving it to my son.

When I first picked up Stephen Stefano's "Passion and Ice", I thought it was just another biography about what drives some of the most successful executives in America. Boy, was I wrong. I couldn't put it down; it was anything but "another" autobiography. Stefano's book is so relevant today in an age where "trickle down" economics and pure self-interest are now being questioned like never before. Instead, Stefano methodically and honestly illustrates through his own life experiences that being driven by values rather than the naked pursuit of profits will, in the end, lead to greater profits. It is a story that every business school in America should have on their required reading lists. Nicely done, Stephen.

Hello Steve,

Hope you are having a great week! Please don't take this the wrong way, but I love your book! I almost finished it at one setting! Not only because I can relate to the what you are saying, and know some of the "characters", but because I believe you! Passion, Integrity, Courage and Empathy, are all traits that do produce good leaders and motivate us to excellence.

I have seen parts of this evidenced in my own life, my professional career, my roles as wife and mother, but your book laid out simple truths in how to integrate those in my everyday life to encourage others to be the best they can be. Thank you for sharing it with me and thank you so much for taking the time out of your busy schedule to meet with me!

Steve, you are one of the great ones in my book! I look forward to our next meeting.

Until then, Take Care,

Colleen Murray

The "passion and ice" values of leadership in Steve Stefano's book will stick with you like oatmeal. Steve's common sense approach to leadership is chronicled through his real life experience and is easy to remember and to incorporate in your daily life. Steve has done us the favor of baring his soul and sharing his wisdom in a book that both educates and entertains.

I really enjoyed your book! Your personality and your energy came right out of the pages and the examples of the different leaders you have worked with were excellent.

Your ICE concept is dead on and something I personally connect with extremely well. I absolutely believe in Integrity, Courage and Empathy and have always strived to be a leader with these qualities.

Bottom line, Steve ... you nailed it! You must be SO proud! I will cherish the personally autographed book forever.

Hello Steve,

I am friends with your cousin Doug, and he gave me a copy of your book Passion and ICE. I thought it was well written and I especially liked the story about your  friend Sal. Your complete admision that  you made a wrong decision (and put it in the book)  was refreshing.

In the small world department , you not making the basketball team in 10th grade hits clse to home. My brother John (we attended Bishiop Kendrick HS) did not make the basketball team in the 10th grade. He became the team manager and continued to work on his game and by senior year was selected to All-Catholic team.

I read the  book while traveling. It is an easy read and holds the reader's attention. The principles are substantiated by real life examples and not only is applicable to business but to everyday life.
If more managers took the author's advice, both employees and managers would have more sucess.

Dear Steve,

Over the weekend i read your book "Passion and ICE". I found it irresistible to the end, only putting it down for brief interruptions.

Having known you over the last 8 years and listening to you speak, many of the stories are familiar. Your Passion and leadership are inspirational and a model for us all. I know that your stories and examples will touch everyone who reads it.

The relationship you describe with your dad is heartfelt an brings back many memories for me of my dad. While my Dad and yours never knew each other on earth i know they would have liked each others principles and zest for life. What great exmples for young men!

In closing let me say that this is simply the best , most practical book i have read in years(and I read many). Your lessons taught reach far beyond leading in business but, more importantly, are great examples of how to lead a better life.

I intend to reflect one the ICE principlesin my days moving forward and ope to apply them to every aspect of life.

I will encourage others to read and do the same

Steve,
What a book!!!! i finished it over the weekend.

I thought i knew Glaxo, but after reading your book I realized that my thoughts and understanding bout the company were only "surface" . People who want  to know more bout the inner workings of the pharmaceutical industry (especially the news media and politicians) would do well to get a copy of your book and read it several times. If they were being honest with themselves, they would come away with a whole different understanding and appreciation of Big Pharma....or at least
Glaxo.

Very importantly, the perspectives that you offer regarding leadership and Integrity,Courage and Empathy (ICE) are clear an encouraging with great stories. I fully subscribe to the "full brain" approach...the benevolent dictator like a Jim butler. I will never think of  ICE storms the same way again.

The most amazing things about this book, however , are your openness and honesty as well as your passion. I have never read anything like it . It encourages me to have true passion in my work and with my family.

I eat oatmea every morning for breakfast. It sticks to my ribs and is good for my heart. This little book is the same way

It continues to be an honor to know you. I look forward to building a closer relationship in the days to come.

All the best,

Steve,

Picked up your book from you mom and went  cover to cover on it last night. Maybe it was because it was so personal to me but I couldn't put it down. It was a great read with a lot of solid advice and the story telling was fantastic. Two things that really hit home for me: 1) i never realized how insightful and business savvy your dad was 2) I hope one of my daughter's write's something about me one day like Jackie did for you.
Great stuff.

Dear Steve,

What an accomplishment — you’ve done brilliantly well in capturing YOU in this book. I know it’s going to continue to serve you — and affect others whom you touch with it.

As you learned from your Dad, People don’t care what you know until they know you care — and the intensity of your caring permeates every page of this book. Bravo!!

Of course, I need to send you a huge virtual hog for the reference you made to me in this book. I continue to labor hard on the importance of HOW leaders lead — that behavioral dimension just cannot be minimized — especially given the demands of this Darwinian business climate and all the anxious people trying to navigate through it. The leaders who know themselves, use their emotions well, stay attuned to/empathic toward others, and build relationships that are meaningful (not just transactional) are going to be the ones who distinguish themselves.

So my hat is off to you, Steve — and my heart travels with yours.

As always,
Karol
